MDHHS Immunization Director speaks about COVID-19 Vaccine

Drug maker Pfizer announced this week that their COVID-19 vaccine is 90-percent successful in their early trial. Pfizer has a manufacturing facility in Kalamazoo.

Bob Swanson, the Director of Immunization at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, says that won’t give Michigan an advantage when it comes to getting the vaccine.

“All of the vaccine that Pfizer is producing or maybe not all of it, but everything that will be used here in the US initially is purchased by the federal government and then it's allocated out the federal government and distributed out through states.”

The number of COVID-19 infections in Michigan continues to rise and hospitals in some parts of the state are at capacity.

State health officials urge everyone to get a flu shot to cut back on influenza cases.
