Detroit is one of several cities tapped by the Trump administration for an increased federal law enforcement presence to stem a surge in violent crime.

Dubbed Operation Legend this influx of federal agents  and nearly five million dollars in grant money is supposed to combat a 51-percent increase in gun crime.

Speaking at a news conference this morning (WED) U-S Attorney in Detroit Matthew Schneider says the agents are here to mess with protests.

“Let me be perfectly clear about what operation legend is not," said Schneider. "There are no federal troops coming to Detroit or any other area in Michigan to interfere with protesters.”

Nakia Wallace is one of the organizers for the anti-police brutality protests in Detroit. She says the city doesn’t need more cops.

“Police violence doesn't solve gun violence," says Wallace. "What does solve it is better education. What does solve it as community resources. What does solve it is putting actual funds and care into communities that have been devastated.”

Schneider says the anti-police brutality protests could be contributing to the rise in crime in Detroit and other cities.
