Housing advocates are calling on Governor Gretchen Whitmer to extend her moratorium on evictions again.

The moratorium expires this week. It was originally announced in March and has been extended four times in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wanda Upshaw is a renter in Detroit who fell behind on rent when she had to go part-time at her job.

She says she started receiving eviction notices while she was in the process of filing for assistance from the city and other nonprofits.

"People need help out here," said Upshaw. "A lot of people, I mean, I know they’re getting the unemployment and all that but it’s not enough."

A spokeswoman for the governor’s office would not say whether the moratorium will be extended again. But she said rental assistance under the eviction diversion program would be available.
