Closures make it hard for shelter animals to get to forever homes

Michigan animal shelters are seeing more adoption requests during the stay-at-home order, but the closure is preventing pets from getting to their forever homes.

Bay County Animal Services is still answering calls and picking up strays… and cages are filling quickly.

Craig Goulet oversees the department. He said since vets have suspended non-essential surgeries, more than 75% of the animals in the shelter still need to be spayed and neutered before they can be adopted.

“The dogs and cats that we have will need to be fixed once things easy up will certainly pose another challenge for us. So then as humanly possible we can get these animals placed into homes.”

Goulet said during the shutdown they’ve been seeing an increase in adoption requests, and, once the state opens back up, they will begin processing them.
