The Department of Natural Resources is considering increasing the number of elk hunters in Michigan.
That’s because a normal elk population is between 500 and 900.
But this year there could be as many as 1,100 in the state.
Brian Mastenbrook with the D-N-R says that many can have a lot of impacts.
“Whether it’s elk in crop fields, whether it’s elk damage to people’s forest regeneration... elk car accidents.”
The D-N-R gave out 200 elk tags this year.
They’ll officially propose a new number at a meeting of the State Natural Resources Commission next month.
Then it will go to public comment.
