A cougar was spotted in Gogebic (go-Gee-bik) County in the Upper Peninsula last month.

It was the 39th sighting since 2008 by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Cody Norton is with the D-N-R.

He says it’s unlikely there’s a breeding population of cougars in Michigan.

“All the evidence we have are they’re young males going out looking for a new territory, never find a female to settle down with, and they just keep cruising.”

Cougars are an endangered and protected species in Michigan.

According to the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service… they have been eliminated from two-thirds of their historic habitats.
