Nearly 3.5 million Michiganders are expected to travel over the holiday season.

That’s nearly a 3.5 percent increase over last year, according to AAA. The auto club said this will be the highest total volume since 2001.

But all those travelers will be paying more this year, compared to last. Gas prices around Michigan are averaging $2.62 a gallon, an increase of roughly 20 cents from 2016.

Travel experts suggest you should be prepared for heavy traffic on Michigan freeways -- and to leave yourself plenty of extra time to reach your destination.
