Physician who helped coin the term "Flatten the curve" says pandemic likely coming to an end

WCMU Public Radio

The University of Michigan physician and professor who helped coin the term “Flatten the curve” at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic says there are many signs it is coming to an end.

The medical historian says there won’t be a clear-cut end to the pandemic, instead it will just sort of end gradually or trail off.

As the number of COVID-19 cases continue to decline in Michigan and the vaccination rate goes up, the director of the University of Michigan center for the history of medicine, author and physician Dr. Howard Markel says the best way you can end the pandemic for yourself is to get vaccinated.

"It’s such an effective vaccine it’s 90 to 95 percent effective in preventing an infection the odds of you getting COVID are very very small," Markel said. "That’s very promising and I think [Michigan] looks a lot better today than it did 8 weeks ago or 12 weeks ago".

Markel added that with good mass vaccination more and more public events will be safe moving forward.
