With 162 ongoing outbreaks, schools are the biggest source of spread for COVID-19 in the state.

Sarah Lyon-Callo is the Director of Epidemiology for the state health department. She says classroom instruction doesn’t seem to be the driving factor in those outbreaks.

“You know the classroom environment itself has not been a strong signal for. For outbreaks it tends to be more the activities associated with schools and including sports but not limited to sports.”

Recently, basketball games in Grand Ledge Public Schools have led to dozens of kids, coaches and parents getting infected.

Over the past week, Michigan has had the 9th highest number of new cases in the country.
