The Michigan State Capitol Commission has called for further study before deciding whether to ban the open carry of firearms in the building.

That’s after an April 30th protest where many people brought guns into the building. The Legislature was meeting to make decisions on the state’s response to the COVID-19 crisis.

The decision to wait was decided on a six-to-zero vote.

Commissioner Joan Bauer is a former Democratic lawmaker.

“I, obviously, take this very seriously. I do not like what I have seen in the news of the threatening figures in the two chambers, and I do think we need to do something. But we can’t do it in haste.”

Commission chair Gary Randall promised the review would be wrapped up as soon as possible.

Attorney General Dana Nessel says the commission has the authority to ban open carry at the Capitol. But the commission’s attorney says it would require a change in state law.
