Sault High School still cleaning up after open window causes pipes to burst

Sault School officials say they are still assessing the damage after pipes burst in a second-floor classroom over the weekend.

An open window in a second-floor science classroom is the suspected cause of the pipes bursting, according to officials.

Dr. Tim Hall is the superintendent of Sault Area Schools. He said the science classroom had roughly 24 sinks that froze and erupted.

“Some of them sheared right off, in fact, it was so cold here and just unleashed thousands of gallons of water that started working its way through the high school.”

Hall said he doesn’t know how much repairs will cost.

“We can’t really put a number to it yet. We know it’s going to be pretty extensive. But at this point, it’s pretty premature to try and put a figure to it. I’m guessing it’ll be several thousand dollars.”

Hall said the water damaged several classrooms and flooded student lockers and shorted out one of the schools main electrical panels.

He said classrooms will need to be moved while repairs of the school are underway.
