The U-S Department of Agriculture is awarding more than 115-thousand dollars to the increase rural access to broadband services in Michigan.

The goal of the grant is to provide better internet for educational and healthcare services in rural Michigan. 16 counties will be included in the project, including Leelanau, Mackinac, Presque Isle, and Roscommon.

Jason Allen is the Michigan director for USDA Rural Development.

“Broadband and connectivity to rural Michigan is a important part of where our department and area is putting extra emphasis, and when we see rural communities in upper Michigan; those dollars are going to allow for students to be able to access the great things at the Michigan Science Center.”

Allen said this increased access could open doors to new career paths for young people living in rural areas.
