Good and bad news for charities during COVID-19, according to BBB

BBB

There’s good news and bad news coming out of a new report from the Better Business Bureau about charitable giving during the coronavirus pandemic.

As the COVID-19 outbreak gains momentum, one third of donors say they want to give more. That’s the good news.   However, at the same time, a recent survey shows 80 percent of charities expect 2020 revenue will be lower than expected.  That’s the bad news.  The Better Business Bureau’s Give.Org released a new study.  Troy Baker, with the Better Business Bureau serving Western Michigan says this is the first of a few surveys they plan to conduct.

“It’s big business, even though it’s a non-profit.  So, they do so much in our communities and we really want to keep track of where things stand, both from thinking of charities and donors who will keep those charities going.”

The report is a survey of 118 BBB Accredited Charities and more than a thousand adults in the U.S.  It explores what charities and donors are looking at as possible consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak.  Baker says the report has a couple bright spots.

“The concern is absolutely there, the great news is, donors haven’t left yet. And especially young people, Generation Z and Millennials tell us they’re the ones who really plan on upping their donations this year.”
