Women's March on Washington

Over the weekend women across the state and country will meet and march for women’s rights.

Events will be held in Traverse City, Midland, Bay City and Detroit, among other communities, all commemorating the one year anniversary of the Women’s March on Washington last year.

Sarah Eisenberg is with Women’s March Michigan, which is hosting nationally affiliated events in Lansing and Marquette. She said it’s important to meet annually to have a discussion about how best to support women in the coming year.

“This annual event is really powerful. It helps us check in with what is the fight for social justice right now, what are our issues, what can we be focusing on, what can we work to change and make better. That’s an annual conversation.”

Eisenberg said the movement has evolved from a protest to one about empowering women.

“The women’s march has really evolved over the last year. We originated as a protest movement last January but since then it’s evolved and changed into a movement about consolidating power and helping encourage women to take a stand and be empowered to fight for social justice and women’s issues.”

Eisenberg said one of the goals for this year is to elevate the voices of activists of color - one of the main critiques from last years march.
