A meeting in Traverse City next week will discuss the importance of pipeline safety in Michigan and around the Great Lakes.

U.S. Senator Gary Peters will be at the hearing focused on alternatives to pipelines in the Great Lakes and threats that the lines pose to Michigan’s economy.

Peters said a number of people will be in attendance including the director of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, and members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

“A coast guard admiral that will talk about recovery efforts should there be an accident, we have NOAA folks who will also talk about the science of freshwater cleanup, and then we have Enbridge, the company who is actually operating this pipeline the senior vice president in charge of operations talking about what they are doing.”

Peters said the purpose of the hearing is to identify alternatives to pipelines as well as discuss the possible closure of Line 5.

The hearing is scheduled Monday at 10am at the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City.
