Traverse City’s board of commissioners has decided to weigh in on a Supreme Court case on equal rights and religious liberty.

The case involves a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple because he said it would infringe on his religious liberty.

Jim Carruthers is Traverse City’s Mayor. He said as a city with pro-LGBTQ ordinances he felt it was important to weigh in.

“I think many mayors and cities and council people from all over the country are signing on to the this because in the long term this could affect the ordinances that we’ve passed in our local municipalities.”

The commission voted 6 - 1 Monday night to support the Colorado Civil Rights Commission's initial decision to rule in favor of the gay couple.

The city will now appear on an amicus brief filed in favor of the gay couple in Colorado.

The US Supreme court is expected to hear the case sometime next year.
