A ski lodge and park in Traverse City is now in the site development phase of a major update after surpassing its fundraising goal by $500,000.
Traverse City pledged $1.5 million in matching funds to the Hickory Hills park.
The Preserve Hickory campaignraised close to $2 million.
Laura Ness is the President of the Preserve Hickory non-profit.
She said the money will provide a new ski lodge, updated snowmaking equipment and year-round activities.
“It’s where over 30,000 children have learned to ski. It’s a very busy recreational area. In order to create a plan for sustainability so that it can operate for another 65 years, we recognize that year round amenities and recreational activities are needed.”
Ness said activities include, “Expanded disc golf, new trails for runners, hikers, bikers, dog walkers, a challenge ropes course and a climbing wall, as well as Nordic trails that can host competitive events.”
Ness said construction is slated to begin next spring.
