Oct. 4 is statewide ‘Walk to School Day’.

The walk to school in Traverse City is set to get a little safer.

Traverse City is in the middle of conducting audits to see how to make walking and biking to school safer.

Russ Soyring is the Planning Director of Traverse City.

“We’ve noted missing sidewalk ramps, missing sidewalks, where a crosswalk would be, painted would be good, some cases the traffic speed is kind of high so a speed type of feedback sign is being recommended.”

Construction is tentatively scheduled for 2019.

“Reducing congestion around schools is a benefit, reducing air pollution is a benefit, and physical exercise is really good for the cognitive abilities of students.”

Soyring said the city is applying for a grants to make the updates through Safe Routes to School, which is a federal program that’s also sponsoring Walk to School Day.
