State to put half million toward Hepatitis A fight

The state continues its fight against a deadly Hepatitis A outbreak today.

Michigan has been dealing with a deadly Hepatitis A outbreak since August of 20-16. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says Michigan has seen nearly 800 cases of the disease.

Each grant is for 20-thousand dollars – and one of the 25 counties that will get a grant is Jackson.

Richard Thoune is the Health Officer for Jackson County’s Health Department.

“This particular viral enemy is, I think, knocking on everybody’s doors.”

The grants are for areas that have had fewer than two cases of Hepatitis A. The idea is to use the money for vaccinations and awareness about the outbreak. That’s because people who travel from outbreak areas to non-outbreak areas can spread the disease.
