The state announced Friday the new research team to conduct a risk analysis study of the Line 5 pipeline beneath the Straits of Mackinac.

The first risk analysis study was terminated in June of 2017 after it came to light a researcher on the study had previously worked for Enbridge.

Nick Assendelft is with the Michigan Energy Agency.

“This analysis will evaluate Enbridge’s liability for a worst case scenario pipeline spill including the impact that such a spill in the straits would have on Michigan’s economy and the environment.”

Assendelft said Dr. Guy Meadows of Michigan Tech., who formerly served on the pipeline safety advisory board, will lead the team.

“Dr. Meadows had a seat on the pipeline safety advisory board so they knew of his integrity, they knew of his expertise. So when he came forward and said he could do this task it was something the advisory board voted on and agreed to unanimously.”

Assendelft said the study will cost $749,110.

He said the timeline for the study is short - the analysis is expected sometime in September.
