Governor Rick Snyder last week announced his plan to bring broadband internet to “every corner of Michigan.”

Snyder’s announcement was backed by a roadmap report created by the Michigan Consortium of Advanced Networks, outlining primary recommendations.

Tanya Baker is with the Governor’s office. She said earlier in the year, Snyder announced an agreement for 20 million in grant funding for broadband.

“This is sort of the starting point and then there will be continued discussions with the legislature to secure that critically needed 20 million in grant funding and establish a long-term broadband commission to continue this important work.”

Baker says the report emphasizes the importance of bringing internet access to underserved areas, particularly for rural economies.

She says there are an estimated 368 thousand rural Michigan households without access to broadband.
