Sleeping Bear Dunes to be featured on postage stamp

US Postal Service

The U.S. Postal Service announced Wednesday that the Sleeping Bear Dunes will be featured on a stamp in 2018.

The 2018 stamps revealed by the Postal Service included designs commemorating Lena Horne, John Lennon, and Mister Rogers.

Scott Tucker is the Superintendent of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. He said the project was largely handled by the postal service.

“The stamp is primarily a United States Postal Service project, they contacted us about a year ago and let us know they were in the process of making a stamp for 2018. We didn’t have anything other than giving them some editing of the story of sleeping bear for the documentation that goes along with the stamp.”

Tucker said the lakeshore is a treasure year round.

“The image coming out on the stamp captures one point of the year which is when it’s seventy degrees and beach weather, but we have twelve months of activity that you can do. It’s just the beginning of great stuff up here.”

Tucker said the Postal Service contacted them last year for final approval on the stamp.

Tucker said the lakeshore sees about one point seven visitors annually and is looking forward to celebrating its fifty year anniversary in 2020.

The stamp will be a priority mail express stamp and cost almost 25 dollars.
