New data from the Secretary of State’s office shows that Michigan has sent out over 200-thousand more absentee ballots this year compared with 2014.
2014 was the state’s last Gubernatorial election.
Data from the Secretary of state shows more than 100-thousand ballots have been returned in 2018 than in the 2014 election cycle.
David Jesuit is a Professor of Political Science at Central Michigan University. He said it’s clear there’s more interest in this year's election.
“Generally speaking greater participation does tend to favor democratic party candidates.”
But Jesuit said he’s hesitant to call this a “blue wave.”
“You know I would be careful, personally, about calling this a blue wave. It’s more that there’s so much that could happen between now and the election.”
A spokesperson for the Secretary of State said the number of contested primaries in the state could also be a reason for the high voter participation.
