A Midland Police Department officer has been placed on paid administrative leave after a shooting.
The officer shot and killed one of two 16-year olds who had been reported to have broken into a vehicle.
Lieutenant David Kaiser is with the Michigan Department of State Police.
“Police attempted to make contact with them. One of them was very compliant and cooperative and stopped. The other suspect fled on foot. Officers gave chase to the subject that fled,” Kaiser said. “During this pursuit, the suspect produced a firearm and fired at the police officer. The police officer returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
He said the suspect that did not try to resist has been put under arrest.
“The one, surviving suspect, has been arrested and placed into a local juvenile facility in Midland,” Kaiser said. “We have since learned that the handgun used in this shooting was stolen from a vehicle in a parking lot in a Holiday Inn Express in Midland.That report was taken in by the city of Midland Police Department.”
He said the officer has been put on paid administrative leave. That’s protocol for an officer involved in a shooting incident.
When the investigation is complete, a report will be sent to a prosecuting attorney for review.
