No knockouts in Mackinac Island gubernatorial debate

Roads, education, health care, and insurance. Those were the prominent issues as six Republican and Democratic candidates for governor shared a stage tonight.

The event took place at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s annual policy conference on Mackinac Island, which attracts the state’s biggest business and political leaders.

The Democrats were businessman Shri Thanedar, former Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed, and former legislator Gretchen Whitmer. The Republicans were state Senator Patrick Colbeck, Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley, and Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette.

This was the second and possibly the last time all the candidates will share a stage. There were no knock-out punches as they head into the August seventh primary election.
