Nine communities in Michigan have been awarded grants to upgrade rural water supplies and improve wastewater management systems.

Nationwide more than four billion dollars in funding is supporting work in 35 states to improve community water systems.

Jason Allen is the state director of rural development with the USDA. He said the Michigan allocation is well over a hundred million dollars.

“These are benefiting communities all along the coast and in central Michigan, and to allow them to expand, improve, and grow their systems which will improve water quality, help attract businesses, and reduce cost to local units of governments because of repairage of breakages in storm sewer separations.”

Allen said Michigan currently has six projects in the works in counties including Genesee, Shiawassee, and Saginaw.

He said funding is available through October and other rural communities are encouraged to apply.

A link to the application is at the USDA website.
