New report says Lake Huron is in “fair” condition

The US Environmental Protection Agency released a report Friday detailing ways to improve the health of Lake Huron.

The report was developed under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, which requires the US and Canada create Lake Huron management plans every five years.

Tinka Hyde is with the EPA and helped draft the report. She said Lake Huron was given a ‘fair’ grade for overall environmental quality.

“The one indicator that is poor is being free from aquatic-terrestrial and invasive species, the biggest cause of that is the invasive mussels that are in the lake.”

Hyde said government organizations need to work with farmers on....

“Reducing the number of nutrients that are flowing into the rivers and into the lake to reduce the number of algal blooms that are going on.”

She said the report is a collaboration of multiple agencies across the region.

“There is a whole team of folks that work together on the local, state, federal, as well as first nations and municipal governments to help develop this plan. It is very much a collaborative effort with Canada.”

Hyde said the group will work together to address the multiple issues facing Lake Huron.
