MSU Extension offers crash course on Michigan's lakes

Jan 2, 2018

The new year will bring a new program to Michigan on the state’s many lakes. It’s titled the ‘Introduction to Lakes Education Course’ and it’s aimed at helping Michigan natives and transplants learn more about one of the state’s most distinctive features.

Bindu Bhakta is a Natural Resources Educator for MSU Extension, which sponsors the course. She said the six-week online course is designed for lakefront property owners, local government officials, lake managers, and educators.

“We know that a lot of people live in one place in Michigan or come from out of state and find themselves living on a lake, and don't know much about what makes a lake healthy, what it takes to steward the lake. So, this a great course for people who just want to learn more about how their lake works and how they can get involved in managing it”.

Bhakta said the course is a good option for school teachers and business who are required to complete continuing education credits.

“We have applied for credits through the Michigan Department of Education state continuing education clock hours. We also have applied for pesticide applicator recertification credits through Michigan Department of Rural Development”.

Bhakta said registration for the course closes January 16. The course begins a week later.
