Michigan’s auto insurance rates remain highest in the nation

For the fourth year in a row Michigan’s auto insurance rates are the highest in the country.

That’s according to an annual study from Insure dot com.

Michelle Megna is an editor at Insure dot com. She said insurance in the state averages around 2,394 dollars a year, roughly one thousand dollars higher than the national average.

“It probably will not come as a huge surprise that the prevailing wisdom is that this is due to Michigan’s no fault insurance laws.”

Megna said some estimates put the number of uninsured drivers in the state at 21 percent. That easily exceeds the national average of 12 percent uninsured motorists.

“If there’s fewer insured drivers paying into the pool of insurance to offset the risk that means rates are going to rise.”

Megna she doesn’t expect Michigan’s insurance rates will change anytime soon.
