Judge rules Flint must choose water contract by Monday

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that Flint must make a decision on its long-term water source by Monday.

The Flint City Council has repeatedly delayed making a decision on the matter. Mayor Karen Weaver recommended that the city enter a 30-year contract to purchase water from the Great Lakes Water Authority.

Flint City council members had asked for an independent analysis of alternatives to that.

The State Department of Environmental Quality sued the council in June, trying to force them to make a decision but the council continued to delay.

In his ruling, the judge said quote “because of the city’s indecision the court must issue this ruling.”

Councilwoman Monica Galloway said in a brief statement that it was quote “irresponsible” for the courts to force the city council into a contract.
