Heavy rain brings flooding to mid-Michigan

East Campus Drive on the campus of CMU, closed due to high water over the road.

Parts of mid-Michigan are under water this morning, after more than 6 inches of rain fell overnight.

Several counties are under a flood warning as a result, including Bay, Gladwin, Huron, Isabella, Mecosta, Midland and Montcalm counties.

Several more inches of rain are possible this morning. This is causing flooding of roads throughout the region, and washouts and road closures are being reported throughout mid-Michigan.

Law enforcement in Isabella and Midland County is asking residents not to travel this morning unless absolutely necessary due to flooding. They say the water is deep enough in many areas to cause vehicles to get stuck or float away. If you do head out this morning, you’re reminded to not drive through flooded roadways, and instead find an alternate route.

According to emergency managers in Isabella County, numerous bridges are also underwater this morning, and may be unsafe for travel.

Central Michigan University is closed due to flooding until 11am Friday due to flooding, and a decision on afternoon operations will be made around 9:30am. Additionally, employees in the Dow Sciences building do not need to report at all today. The building is completely closed due to flooding.
