Grayling has been awarded nearly half a million dollars to bring two vacant downtown buildings back to life.

The buildings were deemed unsafe because of contaminated groundwater, but the grant will address those conditions and allow for safe reuse of the buildings.

The main floors will house commercial space, with apartments above.

Julie Lowe is the Brownfield redevelopment coordinator for the Department of Environmental Quality, which awarded the grant.

“The private investment for the whole project is $4.1 million, and so as a portion of that the environmental portion is what we covered in the grant which was the 454,000.

Lowe said the redevelopment will create ten new jobs and add eight apartments to the downtown area.

She said the grant comes from a larger state project aimed at fostering economic growth and providing jobs.
