EPA says it doesn’t have authority to release study on PFAs

The EPA will not release a study which allegedly shows PFAs impact human health at levels much lower than previously thought, saying it does not have the authority to do so.

A report from Politico found that the EPA and White House had worked to delay the study, citing the “public relations nightmare” it could cause.

After news of the study broke US Congressman Dan Kildee sent letters to the EPA and Health and Human Services Department, calling for the study’s release.

In a written response, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said the EPA does not have the authority but is working to quote “promote the development of science and tools so that there is a cohesive effort to tackle this important issue.”

In response to the letter, US Congressman Dan Kildee said the EPA quote “continues to kick the can down the road on taking any real action to protect American families.”

A spokesperson for Kildee’s office said the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, which conducted the study, falls under the jurisdiction of the EPA and so the EPA has the authority to release it.
