The DNR is awarding nearly one-and-a-half million dollars in grants to improve parks and outdoor facilities in Michigan. The money comes from the Recreational Passport Program that motorist say “yes” or “no” to each time they register their car.

The program started seven years ago. DNR Grant Coordinator, Lindsay Ross, said the participation in recreational passports has grown and this has allowed the state to give more.

“When the program first started we had a maximum of 45 thousand dollars and in 2017 we increased it to 75 thousand dollars. So that gives some of these communities a little bit more money to work with for their recreational projects.”

Facilities receiving  funding include Goodrich Commons in Genesee County,  Hickory Hills in Grand Traverse County, and Island Park in Isabella County.
