Cold weather throughout the state responsible for low blood supply

The harsh weather sweeping through the state has contributed to a blood shortage in Michigan.

Michigan Blood is a primary blood provider for over 60 hospitals across the state, including Munson Healthcare.

Poor road conditions have cancelled blood drives and deterred drivers from making a trip to donate.

Allison Beers is the Community Relations Coordinator for Michigan Blood.

“So what we’re asking right now is everyone to come in and donate and get us back up to the level we’re comfortable with because all it takes is one bad accident and our inventory could be wiped out.”

Beers said while all blood is needed, Michigan Blood is in desperate need of O-Negative, the universal donor.

She said blood drives are scheduled everyday across the state in an effort to bring blood levels back up.

Information on where you can donate can be found here.
