Coast Guard developing plan to cap severed lines beneath straits

US Coast Guard

The Coast Guard is developing a plan to cap two ruptured cables that leaked roughly 600 gallons of dielectric fluid into the straits of Mackinac.

Coast Guard officials say an investigation into the break is ongoing but the Michigan Attorney General filed suit last week against a tug and barge company for dragging an anchor across the lines.

Lt. Sean Murphy is with the Coast Guard. He said a remotely operated vehicle surveyed the line and found the cables were completely severed.

“The engineers are developing a plan to effectively cap those two severed cables to prevent any potential pollution.”

Murphy said work is still being done to withdraw dielectric fluid from the lines.

“We know that between the two lines it holds 800 gallons. We’re at 590 now. We’re going to keep pulling until we get to water essentially.”

Murphy said Enbridge Energy also sent down a RoV to survey its line.

He said the company confirmed the three dents already reported but found no breach of the line infrastructure.

Murphy said the new capping plan will need to be approved by Unified Command before moving forward.
