CMU hosts public health summit on trauma

Central Michigan University

The campus of Central Michigan University hosted a public health summit Friday to discuss how the community can develop trauma-informed practices.

The summit was organized in collaboration with the Central Michigan District Health Department and is in line with a statewide initiative drawing attention to the long-term impact of trauma.

Alison Arnold is the Director of CMU’s Interdisciplinary Center for Community Health and Wellness. She said the event will educate the community on trauma-informed practices.

“Law enforcement if they have an incident in a home where there have been children involved. Some communities have implemented what they call a “handle with care” approach so they let the schools know “just handle these children with care tomorrow.’”

Arnold said coordination is essential to providing trauma-informed care.

“Whether it’s schools or treatment centers or hospitals the way that we can be more informed about the trauma people are experiencing and the way that we with our approach can be more sensitive to that.”

Arnold said the event will also offer an update on how mid-Michigan is handling the opioid crisis.
