The Bay City Commission voted Tuesday to overturn the Mayor’s veto of medical marijuana licenses within the city.

The City Commision voted 8 - 1 to overturn the Mayor’s veto of the ordinance, saying the veto seemed like an unnecessary delay.

The ordinance will allow up to 50 dual use grow operation and dispensary licenses within the city. Each license will cost five thousand dollars.

Mayor Kathy Newsham said she felt the commission moved too quickly and allowed for too many licenses.

“I’ve never been against the medical marijuana coming to Bay City. I just was a little concerned about the number cause people are saying do we want dispensaries every other block in our downtown Bay City.”

Andrew Nijinsky is a City Commissioner and voted in favor of overriding the veto. He said just because the city allows for 50 licenses doesn’t mean they’ll approve every one.

“We have a lot of folks that were waiting to invest in our community and that’s what the City Commission chose: to bring those investments into the community and help increase revenue for the City’s general fund.”

The City Clerk reports that since the city commission override, twenty-five individuals have collected the necessary paperwork to file for licenses.
