Michigan is about to be one step closer to voting on marijuana legalization in 20-18.
The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol wants to do just that. Their proposal would legalize marijuana, but it would be taxed and regulated by the state.
The group collected over 350-thousand signatures to turn into the Board of State Canvassers.
Josh Hovey is with the campaign. He says they’re ready to move on to the campaigning stage.
“We think ours is a very measured, reasonable approach, and something the voters will support.”
“It’s a massive effort. I mean when you look at collecting hundreds of thousands of signatures it takes people going out all over the state, standing in out in the sun, and out in the wind, and the rain all summer long.”
He says they got a last minute assist.
“Fortunately we had enough people come through to push us over the edge, and now we’re focused on raising the money we need for a campaign next year. So, one fundraising hurdle cleared and a whole ‘nother fundraising campaign yet to go.”
The Board of State Canvassers will have to certify that the group has enough valid signatures. After that, the Legislature will have 40 session days to look over the measure. It can then pass it like a regular bill, or let it go to the ballot, or put another question on the same topic on the 20-18 ballot along with it.
