Michigan’s first case of West Nile Virus this year has been reported in Sanilac County.

This is the first case of a human with West Nile this year, however dozens of birds and mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus.

Health officials said symptoms of West Nile may show up three to 15 days after being bitten, but most people, they said, won’t have any symptoms.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reminding people to avoid mosquito bites by applying insect repellent, wearing bright colored long-sleeved clothes, and ensuring there is no standing water near your home.
