A Michigan program that provides fresh foods to students around the state has grown for its third year in a row.

The “10 Cents a Meal” program provides schools up to 10 cents per meal in matching funds to purchase locally grown produce.

When the meal program began in 2016 it served 48-thousand students. Today it serves more than 130-thousand.

Diane Golzynski is the director of the office of health and nutrition services with the Department of Education.

“Every year we’ve had additional funding. So we started off at 250,000 we’re up to 575,000.”

Golzynski said the program is a win-win for everyone. Students get healthy foods, and farmers get a larger market.

The program covers 27 counties, including Genesee, Emmet, and Huron.
