Petitioners are out all around Michigan trying to gather signatures for a ballot measure that would codify a right to abortion into the state constitution.

Kelly Dillaha is the Michigan program director for Red, Wine, and Blue, a political awareness and activist organization. She said when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade it mobilized people to gather signatures and put their name on the petition.

"When the leak first came from SCOTUS, and then again today, there’s huge renewed interest in signing a petition," she said. "That’s what I’ve been doing right now. I’ve been driving around all day to make sure our volunteers have the materials they need, so when people come to the sites where the petitions are they can sign."

The ballot measure's deadline is July 11, which has electrified activists around Michigan.

“My phone has been blowing up all day, our social media has hundreds of people joining our group today," she said. "There are rallies all over the city of Detroit, all around the state.”

The petition must be signed in person, on paper according to state law, Dillaha said.
